Origin and meaning

Surname of Greek-Byzantine origin, present in the province of Reggio Calabria (Bruzzano and Bovalino area) and in the province of Catanzaro (Girifalco); also Sicilian. In the Calabrian dialect celòna means "tortoise", from the Greek χελώνη. Rohlfs refers to Cilona (see).
