Origin and meaning

E. Rossoni notes that this surname derives from the trade of cheese producer: casu in the Sardinian language means "cheese", from the Latin caseus. Its transformation into a surname is documented in medieval Sardinian sources: among the signatories of the Peace of Eleonora (1388) figure several individuals with this surname coming from different localities of the island, and in the Condaghe of San Pietro di Silki (11th–13th centuries) it already appears as a family surname.

F. De Laurentiis proposes, on the other hand, that it is an altered form of the Sardinian term casa, without linking it to the cheesemaking trade.
