It comes from the Greek càos, "absolute void, abyss", according to V. Blunda. The Greek term designates the empty and formless space. The Sicilian surname functioned as a nickname applied to the ancestor for some trait of his character or environment, later transformed into a surname along the family line in the onomastics of southern Italy.
