Origin and meaning
They could derive from the name of a locality Canopoli, near Perfugas and Erula, in the Sassari area. There are signs of the transformation into a surname at the beginning of the 17th century with Antonio Canopoli, archbishop of Oristano between 1588 and 1621. According to another interpretation, the surname would be of Corsican origin and would derive from the Old Italian canòpo, meaning "miner".
