Origin and meaning

E. Rossoni notes that the surname derives from a nickname, in some cases dialectal, linked to the trade of bell-ringer or of bell-maker. He identifies its presence in the Vicenza, Foggia, Cosenza and Caltanissetta areas.

V. Blunda goes deeper into its Sicilian variant: it derives from the dialectal word campanàru, meaning "bell-ringer", that is, the person responsible for ringing the bells of the parish church to mark the canonical hours, announce the mass, funerals, weddings and community alerts. Blunda highlights that this function had great social relevance in pre-modern Sicilian localities, where the pealing of bells organised daily life and gave symbolic cohesion to the community.
