Blunda presents it as a Sicilian surname of Germanic origin, derived from the personal name Bozzone, an augmentative form linked to the root boz in its hypocoristic form, with the Italian suffix -one, productive in the formation of medieval personal names. He recalls that the consonant doubling -zz- is characteristic of Italian anthroponymy, where it reinforces the expressive character of the original form. As a surname it is preserved especially in areas of central and southern Italy, where the Lombard presence arrived through the Duchy of Benevento and the later Norman repopulation of the southern territories.
