The surname Buora and its variant Buoro present a multiple origin, with possible derivations both nickname-based and anthroponymic. According to E. Rossoni, in the Venetian sphere they could derive from the archaic Venetian term buora or buoro (related to boreas, the cold northeast wind), which would indicate the provenance of ancestors from Alpine or Austrian regions. In Piedmont, on the other hand, he proposes a possible derivation from a nickname based on the dialectal term buora, meaning "flooded or marshy area", which suggests a relation with the geographical environment.

From the point of view of distribution, E. Rossoni notes that Buora is very rare and appears in a scattered way in northern Italy (Piedmont, Lombardy, Veneto and lower Friuli), while Buoro is specific to the Treviso area, especially in localities such as Oderzo, Orsago, Ponte di Piave, Mareno di Piave and Pieve di Soligo.

For his part, F. De Laurentiis proposes a different interpretation, linking the surname with the auspicious name Bonóra (from buona ora, "good hour"), meaning "favourable moment" or "at last", referring to a much-desired child. This hypothesis would integrate it within the group of surnames derived from names of good omen.

Taken together, the interpretations agree in pointing to a non-univocal origin: on the one hand, possible nicknames linked to the natural environment or to geographical provenance, and on the other, an anthroponymic derivation of auspicious character, with regional evolution in northern Italy.
