Surname Bulfamante

Origin and meaning

The authors propose very different origins for the surname Bulfamante, both linked to Sicily.

E. Rossoni describes it as an extremely rare surname, clearly Sicilian and peculiar to the Palermo area. He derives it from the medieval Germanic name Bulfman, a form with the exchange between b and v typical of some dialects of the name Wolfman ("wolf man").

V. Blunda presents it as a Sicilian surname of Arabic origin. He derives it from the etymon bū 'l hammād, meaning "the one who always praises God", a form of Islamic devotion turned into a personal name after the Muslim domination of the island (827–1091).
