The authors agree that the surname derives from the adjective bruno ("dark" or "of dark complexion"), although with different nuances. F. De Laurentiis considers it a derivative of the surname Bruni, while R. Brondolo describes it more precisely as a diminutive formed directly on the adjective bruno.

Brondolo also notes that a specific area of presence of the surname is located in the Scrivia valley, in Liguria, from where a group of families moved towards the Locarno area, in the canton of Ticino (Switzerland).
