Origin and meaning

They derive, through diminutives, from the name Bruno, present in Italian usage since the Middle Ages but already existing among the Goths and Franks, or from a nickname related to the colour of the complexion or the hair. The transformation into a surname is documented in a notarial deed of 1262. Brugnetti has a cluster in the Bergamo area and another between the Rome and Frosinone areas. Brugnola, very rare, has clusters in Friuli and in Puglia. Brugnoli is spread throughout central-northern Italy.
