The authors agree that it is a very rare surname, peculiar to Sicily, which derives from a nickname based on the Sicilian dialectal term brucchièri, which designates the one who guides and directs the reapers, occupying the position of head of the line during the work.

F. Miranda specifies that the surname is present in around twelve municipalities of Sicily, Lombardy and Calabria. On the island it is documented in the Catania area —in localities such as Scordia, Catania, Misterbianco and Biancavilla—, the Enna area —in Cerami, Troina and Regalbuto— and the Palermo area —in Palermo and Carini—.

Blunda adds context on the role that originates the nickname: the brucchièri was the most experienced worker of the teams of reapers who harvested the wheat by hand in the great Sicilian latifundia during the summer. His function was to set the rhythm of the work and direct the line of advance of the reaping, a central role in the cereal economy of the island until the agricultural mechanisation of the 20th century.

E. Rossoni places the origin of the surname specifically in the area between the Catania and Enna areas.
