Germanic or Celtic given name. Probably from the root beraht or bert, to which in Anglo-Saxon correspond bright or wright, meaning "splendid" or "illustrious". Two saints bore it: a Swedish one of the 14th century, whose feast day is 8 October, and a Scottish one of the 6th century, whose feast day is 1 February. Made masculine it gives Brícito, which is a surname in Treviso. In Friulian the forms are Birgitte and Bride (Brida is also found in Sercambi); the surname Brida. In the Venetian surnames Brisiotto and -sotto, Alberico, Fabrizio and perhaps also Ambrogio (Brosiotto) converge. The Friulian surnames Cita and Citta more probably derive from cite, which in the Friulian dialect means "pot".
