Surname Bregoli
Origin and meaning
Variant of Bregola. According to V. Blunda, it is a Sicilian surname of Germanic origin, derived from the personal name Bergan, an anthroponym linked to the root berg (mountain, height, mount) with phonetic adaptation peculiar to northern Italian. The proparoxytone stress of the form Brègoli is characteristic of the onomastics of the Alpine regions, where the preservation of archaic stress patterns is more marked. As a surname it is preserved especially in eastern Lombardy, in areas near Lake Garda, where the Lombard presence left particularly dense traces in the local anthroponymy.
