Surname Brambilla
Origin and meaning
The authors agree that the surname derives from the place name Brembilla, a locality of the Bergamo area situated in the Val Brembana. F. Miranda specifies that the name Brembilla probably comes from a pre-Roman language, where brem would mean "to resound", and designated watercourses and channels that flow into the river Brembo. The form Brambilla reflects a phonetic trait of Lombard: the open vowel a replaced the close e peculiar to the area of origin.
The authors also agree that the surname originates in a precise historical event: on 2 March 1443, when the Ghibelline inhabitants expelled from their lands by the Bergamo Guelphs —favourable to Venetian domination— were taken in by Milan under the government of the Visconti. There they received privileges and tax exemptions for a hundred years, and were registered with the surname Brambilla, which identified them as "those who came from the Brembilla valley".
As for its distribution, Miranda notes that the surname spread to almost all the regions of Italy, with greater presence in Lombardy, Emilia-Romagna, Piedmont and Liguria, and also in Veneto, Lazio, Tuscany, Puglia and the Aosta Valley. In Sicily it appears in localities of the Catania, Messina, Trapani, Syracuse and Enna areas. Surnames in Italy highlights especially its concentration in the metropolitan area of Milan and in the province of Monza and Brianza.
Geographic distribution: Surname spread across a little over 800 comuni of almost all the Italian regions, in particular Lombardy, Emilia-Romagna, Piedmont, Liguria, and also Veneto, Lazio, Tuscany, Puglia and the Aosta Valley. In Sicily it is present in some provinces: in the Catania area (Catania, Aci Castello, San Giovanni La Punta), the Messina area (Messina, San Teodoro), the Trapani area (Pantelleria), the Syracuse area (Lentini) and the Enna area (Regalbuto).
