Surname common in Lombardy, but documented also in Liguria (in Genoa it is frequent in deeds of the 12th century in the Latinised forms Bonusbellus and f. Bonabella, Bombellus). The base is the medieval auspicious name Bombèllo, that is "may he be (may he grow) good and beautiful".
