The authors agree that the surname is characteristic of Sicily and derives from a medieval nickname, later a personal name, based on the archaic and dialectal word biundo, equivalent to the Italian biondo, which means "blond" or "golden-haired", a trait that probably distinguished the founding ancestor of the lineage.

Rossoni notes that the surname is concentrated in the Caltanissetta area —especially Gela—, Palermo —with presence in Cinisi, Castelbuono, Palermo and Terrasini—, Ragusa —in Vittoria—, Trapani —in Partanna and Castelvetrano— and Messina. As a historical reference for the base name, he mentions the humanist Flavio Biondo, born in Forlì in 1392 and died in Rome in 1463, considered a precursor of archaeological studies.

F. Miranda broadens the geographical distribution beyond Sicily, indicating presence also in Lombardy, Liguria, Piedmont, Lazio, Emilia-Romagna, Veneto and Puglia. Within Sicily, he details clusters in the Palermo area, in the Messina area —with localities such as Ucria and Raccuja—, in the Trapani area —including Campobello di Mazara, Salemi and Alcamo—, in the Catania area —with Caltagirone, Bronte and Catania itself— and in the Enna area, where it is recorded in Regalbuto and Piazza Armerina.
