Surname Bin
Origin and meaning
The surname Bini and its variants present an anthroponymic origin linked to abbreviated forms of medieval personal names. According to E. Rossoni, it is typical of the Triveneto area —including areas such as Rovigo, Verona, Padua, Venice, Treviso, Pordenone, Udine and Trieste— with an additional cluster in the Varese area. He proposes that it could derive from abbreviated dialectal forms of names such as Albino or Giacobino, or from apocopated forms of the Germanic name Bindus, documented in the 13th century.
Along the same lines, F. De Laurentiis notes that Bini is a variant spread in the Veneto, derived from the name Bino, an abbreviated form of hypocoristics ending in -bino, such as Albino, Giacobino, Bernardino or Ubaldino. This interpretation reinforces the idea of a surname arisen from simplified personal names, very common in medieval practice. The form Bin, in particular, is the truncated variant characteristic of the Friulian sphere.
Taken together, both interpretations agree in pointing to an anthroponymic origin based on abbreviated or affectionate forms of longer names, with a strong implantation in northeastern Italy and an evolution linked to the dialectal particularities of the region.
💡 The surname Bin also appears as variants of the surnames Bina and Bini in other studies consulted in this project.
