E. Rossoni presents it as clearly Sicilian, peculiar to the southwestern area of the island. He derives it probably from names of Galician or Portuguese localities; he recalls that in Galician and Portuguese the term bica means "large strawberry".

V. Blunda presents it as a Sicilian surname of dialectal origin, linked to agricultural equipment. He derives it from the dialectal word bbìca, meaning "long rope for oxen". As a surname it may have originated in a nickname applied to a tall and thin person, in a bodily metaphor frequent in Sicilian onomastics, or as a reference to the trade of the one who made these long ropes necessary to guide and tie the ox teams in the fieldwork of pre-modern Sicily.
