According to E. Rossoni, it derives from a place name originating in the Celtic term barto ("forest"), with the suffix -aghi, which is the plural of the Celtic -ago ("field"), indicating a cultivated area near a forest.

It is typical of the Como area —Inverigo, Erba, Como, Pusiano and Albavilla— and especially of the Lecco area —Annone di Brianza, Lecco and Mandello del Lario—, and of Giussano in the Milan area. Bartezaghi is typical of Bareggio in the Milan area, and Bartezzaghi is likewise typical of the Milan area, of Vittuone in particular; both are very rare. All should derive from a place name originating in the Celtic word barto ("forest"), perhaps to indicate a wooded area, with the suffix -aghi clearly being the plural of the Celtic -ago ("field").
