Surname Barbanera

Origin and meaning

The authors agree that the surname derives from a nickname based on the physical characteristics of the founder of the lineage, in particular the thick and dark beard.

E. Rossoni notes it as peculiar to the Perugia area. F. Miranda agrees on that Umbrian origin, but broadens the geographical distribution: the surname is found spread across around one hundred and twenty Italian municipalities, with predominant presence in Umbria, Sicily and Piedmont, and also in Lazio, Tuscany and the Marche, as well as other regions to a lesser extent.

Miranda details especially its presence in Sicily: in the Catania area —with localities such as Tremestieri Etneo and Misterbianco—, in the Palermo area —including Misilmeri, Bagheria and Isola delle Femmine—, in the Syracuse area —with Lentini and Carlentini—, in the Ragusa area —with Modica— and in the Enna area, with Regalbuto and Agira.

💡 The surname Barbanera also appears as variant of the surname Barbagallo in other studies consulted in this project.
