The surname Bandieramonte presents divergent interpretations regarding its original form. Girolamo Caracausi considered it a deformation of Brandimonte, derived from an old Germanic name composed of branda ("sword") and munda ("protection"), while Gerhard Rohlfs interpreted it as a corruption of Brandimarte, a character in Ariosto's Orlando Furioso.
