Surname Balegno

Origin and meaning

According to A. Bongioanni, the surname Balegno could be related to the place name San Benigno Canavese, whose Piedmontese dialectal form San Balegn is said to have given rise to the surname. In this interpretation, it would be a toponymic surname used to identify people coming from that locality of Piedmont.

Another explanation links it directly with Balegno, a mountain locality situated about ten kilometres northwest of Collegno, in the Turin area. From this perspective, the surname would have arisen as an indicator of the family's place of origin.

Bongioanni also mentions that some local historians have tried to relate similar names, such as Beligna in Friuli, with the Celtic god Belenus. However, he considers that this hypothesis lacks sufficient documentary evidence and prefers explanations based on historically documented place names and on regional linguistic evolution.

💡 The surname Balegno also appears as altered form of the surname Benigno in other studies consulted in this project.
