Surname Alamanno
Origin and meaning
The authors agree that the surname originates in an ethnonym of Germanic tradition, linked to the people of the Alamanni.
A. Bongioanni identifies it as a Germanic given name, derived from the people of the same name. He notes that it is frequent in Tuscany. He adds that the Mannini, who moved to Friuli, became Manin, and that the Piedmontese Salamano is perhaps related to the Tuscan Ser Alamanno.
B. Durante takes up De Felice's interpretation, according to which the surname derives from the ethnonym Alamanno ("German, Lombard, Germanic"). He notes that the form could originally have been used to designate a foreigner, of Germanic stock.
