Origine et signification

E. Rossoni et N. Bergamo s'accordent sur l'origine grecque de ce nom de famille, quoiqu'ils diffèrent dans l'interprétation : pour E. Rossoni, il dérive de pentemallos (« boucle de cheveux »), tandis que N. Bergamo l'interprète comme pente mallòs (« cinq laines »).

E. Rossoni ajoute que la variante Pintimalli, selon le chercheur Rohlfs, dérive du terme dialectal calabrais pintimallu, qui désigne une plante herbacée appelée plantain. Il documente ces fixations comme nom de famille à Gioia Tauro au moins depuis le XVIIIe siècle.

Répartition géographique : Pentimalli is characteristic of the Reggio Calabria area, especially of Sant'Eufemia d'Aspromonte. Pintimalli, absolutely rare, and Pintomalli, even rarer, are also from the Reggio Calabria area.
