Ces noms dérivent tous, directement ou à travers des formes affectives, du terme germanique baro (homme libre), décliné baroni (de l'homme libre). Attesté à Grosio, en Valteline, dans la seconde moitié du XVe siècle, et à Bormio en 1630.
